Fannie Lou Hamer was a civil rights activist who focused on enabling African Americans to vote. She helped organize
the 1964 Freedom Summer voter registration drive in Mississippi and co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to challenge the segregated politics of that state.
